THE HEALTHCARE CHAPLAIN'S ROLE AT END-OF-LIFE: 7 BIBLICAL WAYS TO BRING HOPE & DIGNITY. BY APOSTLE EGEGWU EMMANUEL.

When medicine says “there is nothing more we can do,” God’s ministry has just begun. 

As a certified Healthcare Chaplain, I have stood at many bedsides where cure was no longer the goal. In those sacred moments, the chaplain’s job is to bring three things: *Compassion, Hope, and Dignity.*

If you have a loved one in hospital, or if you are a believer called to visit the sick, here are 7 biblical truths every chaplain lives by.

*1. What Is End-of-Life Care?* 

End-of-life care, also called palliative care, is when doctors shift from “curing” to “comforting.” The goal is to remove pain, reduce fear, and give peace. 

*Chaplain’s Role:* While the doctor manages the body, the chaplain cares for the soul. We remind the patient: You are more than your sickness. You are God’s child.

*2. Biblical Hope: Death Is Not The End* 

Jesus said in *John 14:1-3*, _“In my Father’s house are many mansions… I go to prepare a place for you.”_ 

*Chaplain’s Role:* We bring hope by reminding patients that death is a doorway, not a dead-end. For the believer, to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. 2 Corinthians 5:8

*3. Biblical Comfort: God Walks Through the Valley With You* 

*Psalm 23:4* says, _“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me.”_ 

*Chaplain’s Role:* Fear is normal at end-of-life. We read Psalm 23 aloud, hold hands, and assure the patient that God is in the room with us.

*4. Biblical Dignity: You Are Still Worthy of Prayer* 

*James 5:14-15* says, _“Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders… and anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.”_ 

*Chaplain’s Role:* Anointing oil is not magic. It is a sign that says, “God still sees you. You are still important. You are still loved.” This restores dignity when the body is weak.

*5. Biblical Permission: There Is A Time To Let Go* 

*Ecclesiastes 3:1,2* says, _“To everything there is a season… a time to be born, and a time to die.”_ 

*Chaplain’s Role:* Many families feel guilty about stopping treatment. As a chaplain, I help them see that letting go naturally is not “killing.” It is honoring God’s timing with peace.

*6. Meeting Emotional & Spiritual Needs* 

Dying patients often face 4 battles: *Fear, Regret, Loneliness, and Loss of Purpose.* 

*Chaplain’s Role:* 

1.  *Fear* → We pray for peace. Philippians 4:7 

2.  *Regret* → We lead them to forgive and be forgiven. 

3.  *Loneliness* → We sit. We don’t leave. Presence is ministry. 

4.  *Purpose* → We help them bless their children or record a last word.

*7. Practical Ministry at the Bedside* 

1.  *Ask First:* “May I pray with you?” Never force prayer. 

2.  *Keep it Short:* 2-3 sentences. “Lord Jesus, be with Your child now. Let Your peace rule this room. Amen.” 

3.  *Use Scripture:* Psalm 91, Psalm 23, Isaiah 41:10 

4.  *Work With Doctors:* The chaplain supports the medical team. We don’t replace them.

*Prayer:* I reject demonic dreams. I receive godly dreams from the Holy Spirit!

*Prayer:* Lord, purge my dream channel. Let only You speak to me at night!

*33. Scripture:* Matthew 13:25 — "While men slept, his enemy came..." 

*Prayer:* I cancel every evil plantation made while I slept in Jesus name!

*34. Scripture:* Psalms 91:5 — "You shall not be afraid of the terror by night" 

*Prayer:* I refuse to fear. Terror by night, your power is broken over me!

*35. Scripture:* Psalms 4:8 — "I will both lie down in peace, and sleep" 

*Prayer:* I decree peace over my sleep. No more pollution in Jesus name!

*36. Scripture:* Proverbs 3:24 — "When you lie down, your sleep will be sweet" 

*Prayer:* From tonight, my sleep shall be sweet and protected!

*37. Scripture:* Ecclesiastes 5:12 — "The sleep of a laborer is sweet" 

*Prayer:* I am a laborer for Christ. I claim sweet, attack-free sleep!

*38. Scripture:* Isaiah 29:8 — "It shall be as when a hungry man dreams..." 

*Prayer:* I break the power of empty, deceiving dreams over my life!

*39. Scripture:* Jeremiah 23:28 — "Let him who has My word speak My word faithfully" 

*Prayer:* Lord, let Your Word alone dominate my dream life!

*40. Scripture:* Zechariah 10:2 — "The diviners see lies, they tell false dreams" 

*Prayer:* I reject every false dream. I cut off lying dream sources!

*SECTION 5: TOTAL VICTORY — 10 PRAYERS*

*41. Scripture:* Luke 10:19 — "I give you authority...over all the power of the enemy" 

*Prayer:* I use my authority in Christ to trample spirit husband/wife underfoot!

*42. Scripture:* James 4:7 — "Resist the devil, and he will flee from you" 

*Prayer:* You spirit of riding, I resist you. FLEE NOW in Jesus name!

*43. Scripture:* Mark 16:17 — "In My name they will cast out demons" 

*Prayer:* In Jesus name, I cast out every demon assigned to my night!

*44. Scripture:* Isaiah 54:17 — "No weapon formed against you shall prosper" 

*Prayer:* Weapon of dream manipulation, you shall NOT prosper against me!

*45. Scripture:* 2 Timothy 1:7 — "God has not given us a spirit of fear..." 

*Prayer:* I reject fear. I have power, love, and sound mind while sleeping!

*46. Scripture:* Romans 8:37 — "We are more than conquerors through Him" 

*Prayer:* I am more than a conqueror over night attacks!

*47. Scripture:* 1 John 4:4 — "Greater is He that is in me..." 

*Prayer:* The Greater One lives in me. You lesser spirits, get out!

*48. Scripture:* Colossians 2:15 — "He disarmed principalities and powers..." 

*Prayer:* Lord, disarm every power riding my destiny at night!

*49. Scripture:* Psalms 18:39 — "You have armed me with strength for battle" 

*Prayer:* I receive strength to win the battle of the night in Jesus name!

*50. Scripture:* Revelation 21:7 — "He who overcomes shall inherit all things" 

*Prayer:* I AM AN OVERCOMER. I inherit peaceful sleep, pure dreams, and victory! AMEN!

*PROPHETIC INSTRUCTIONS:*

1. *Anoint your bed:* Use olive oil. Draw cross on pillow, bedposts. Say "This bed is a no-fly zone for demons"

2. *Before sleeping:* Read Psalm 91 + Psalm 27 out loud. 

3. *If attack comes in dream:* Shout "JESUS!" in the dream. Wake up and pray  number 42 immediately.

4. *Do 7-day water fast 6am-6pm* while praying these. Break with communion.

3 Prayers to Pray When the Doctor's Report Looks Bad

Last week, a father called me from a Hospital. 

His exact words: "Chaplain, the doctor just said there's nothing more they can do."

Maybe you've heard those words too. Or someone you love has.

In that moment, fear screams louder than faith.

But here are 3 prayers I gave that father — and they work every time:

**1. The "Even If" Prayer - Daniel 3:18**

"God, I believe You CAN heal. But even if You don't do it my way, I will still trust You."

This prayer breaks the spirit of fear. It tells heaven you trust God's character, not just His miracles.

**2. The "Remember Your Word" Prayer - Isaiah 55:11**

"Father, You said in Psalm 107:20 that You sent Your Word and healed them. I stand on Your Word right now over this sickness."

God is obligated to His Word, not our panic. Remind Him what He promised.

**3. The "Midnight Praise" Prayer - Acts 16:25**

"Lord, I don't understand this report, but I choose to praise You right here in this hospital room."

Paul and Silas praised at midnight. The earthquake came AFTER the praise. Your breakthrough follows your worship.

For 10 years I’ve stood in the faith, I've visited the sick both at home and in hospital.  I’ve watched monitors flatline. I’ve held the hands of mothers at 3am when doctors say “there’s nothing more we can do.”

And I’ve seen prayer do what medicine cannot.

*3 Times Prayer Changed Everything*

*1. The Girl the Doctors Sent Home to Die*  

A 15 year-old girl with severe abdominal pains. Doctors told the parents to take him home. We formed a prayer chain — the mother, the siblings, the patient  and me. We prayed Psalm 118:17: _“He shall not die, but live.”_ 48 hours later, the sever pain disappear. Today that girl is fine and healthy. Medicine treats. Prayer heals.

*2. The 4 years paralyzed woman*  

 A woman was paralyzed  and her  blood count was too low. Hospital tried their best all to no avail . Her son  was ready to sell  any thing just to help his mother, I visited them in their village in Benue state. We prayed and I laid hands on her and immediately she began to walk  The people around  asked, “What did you give her?” I answered "We gave her nothing". God did. Today She’s alive.

*3. The Dead Child  Who Couldn’t Breathe Again*  

A child lost his life I was there when it happened, the mother and sister in-law was crying and I told them not to cry, we form a prayer chain and begin to pray, after some minutes, I read a scripture from Exodus 23: 26 "there shall nothing cast their young, nor be barren, in thy land: the number of thy days I will fulfill "

When I declared it out the child came back alive. Today he is 4 years old.
